The exhibition presents the results of the first stage of the speculative project ‘Fossibilities’ carried out with the support of the Goethe Institut, at the Faculties of Fine Arts of Valencia (UPV) and Facultad de Bellas Artes Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche (UMH). The project makes interdisciplinary use of elements from archaeology, cultural heritage and oceanography. Although it addresses global issues such as environmental pollution, it draws on local case studies, inspired by legends of the Catalan-speaking tradition, as well as the flora and fauna of the Gulf of Valencia.
The prospect of conceptually surpassing the category of the ‘human’ in the Anthropocene Era appears hand in hand with science in the last three decades of the twentieth century as a result of increased interest in environmental and ecological crises and their corresponding socio-economic consequences. The greening of knowledge and its research prospects are becoming a challenge not only for the disciplines of science and the humanities, but also for the arts.
A dystopian scenario is, in this case, the starting point for combining science and fantasy in the creation of a potential post-anthropogenic bestiary, featuring organisms that could exist after our era. Through a series of sculptural pieces, we are transported to a future as distant as the age of the dinosaurs, but in a reversed timeline. Each of the fossils presented invites us to an exercise in reflection, telling us a diverse story that addresses different problems, such as eutrophication, mutation, pollution and global warming. To give us an idea of the evolutionary magnitude of these organisms of the future, a unique collection of plausible fossils has been created and will be on display at ESPAI VITRINA in the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universitat Politècnica de València, from 17.07 to 14.09.2023.
