GLOCAL ORNAMENTS OF POMERANIA
A design developed within the Młoda Polska [Young Poland] 2015 scholarship resulted in the creation of patterns adapted for embroidery by local embroiderers from the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association and shared at workshops and in the form of a digital catalog.
Designing a Pomeranian ornament, based on the tradition – this is a sensitive subject because of a sensitive group of activists.
I have limited the selected species to those which are protected or can be found only in Pomerania. In this way, the project also gained an educational layer, visible during workshops carried out with the Institute of Urban Culture in Gdańsk.
Protected species have created a perfect context to be included in the ornament and that gave them also that special glocal vibe. Because some of the species are known worldwide, but also protected, the memory of such taxa touches geo-economic, ecological and cultural issues and the ornament combines all that. A medium consisting in creating and “decorating” was used to promote the knowledge of the local and unique environment.

The designed patterns were used in action.
Ms Danuta Niechwiadowicz, an expert in embroidery, agreed to help with the practical part. Ms. Danuta is a member of the Folk Artists’ Association, she makes Kashubian embroidery, mainly in the Żukowo, Wejherowo and Puck variants.
